Going to the Venice Beach Boardwalk is like opening a time capsule and re-living the sights, smells, colors, and people that existed once upon a time long ago. In the case of the Venice Beach Boardwalk, it takes you back to the Haight Ashbury District of the 1960's, and the Flower Power, Love/Peace generation that existed at that time. Unlike it's neighbor, Santa Monica Beach, it is not Upscale or Aloof at all, but rather, kick back, relaxed, very arts and crafts oriented, and distinctly down scale and much more affordable. The entire boardwalk stretches over a mile in length, starting with a row of multiple story beach houses, facing the beach, and picking up with a business district that runs the entire span of the Boardwalk. The business are packed in, side by side, with no consideration at all for any type of planned theme or color scheme, looking like a bowl of brightly colored M & M's, mixed with Ju-Ju Beads and gummy monsters. There you will find shop after shop of Medical Marijuana distributors touting the health benefits and high quality of their Herbal Wares. Indeed some even have full time doctors on staff that will issue you a medical marijuana certificate, and a FREE SAMPLE on the spot ! Gone are the days when a visit to the doctor would fetch you a free candy sucker on a stick ! Arts and crafts stores abound all over, along with many restaurants, eateries, and confections stands of evcry type, description and budget. T-shirt shops, bathing wear shops, sunglasses dealerships, bike rentals, and hundreds, HUNDREDS, of tiny little vending booths set up on the concrete sides of the Boardwalk that are set up and torn down daily by those booth vendors. Competition is so high for the sidewalk vending spaces, that the spaces are auctioned off, in a lottery, every morning. Just being registered, and having paid your yearly fees doesn't get you a spot on the walk, you have to stand in line, every single morning to have a space to set up your booth. All ages and all types of persons set up these booths, while I was there, a young black boy, of about 9 or 10 years, set up a space where he was selling his hand made bracelets and necklaces, some were actually very nice. He didn't have the money for a folding table, chair, or canopy, he just laid his wares out on a colorful blanket, and sold his items sitting cross-legged, on the sand, behind his blanket of goods.
Along this walk also, are the last living remains of the Flower Children of the 60's, many having booth spaces of their own, selling hand painted oil paintings on discarded and found pieces of aged wood, or, having become tattoo artists, massage therapists, or psychic readers. All up and down the boardwalk, are droves and droves of tourists, from all over the world, bands of skater boys, bands of roller skaters, bands of cyclists, both amateur and professional racers, and of course, the world famous muscle builders of Venice Beach, who now have their very own workout center, behind an iron fence, you may see, but not touch... There are many activities that cost nothing at all, like, working out at the open fitness center, handball courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, and a new, recently completed world class skate park. And of course, there is the beach itself, with sunbathing, swimming, wading, surf boarding and body-boarding all going on at once, just a few feet, sometimes inches, of each other. Venice Beach is the only community I am aware of that not only tolerates graffiti at the beach, but actually has sections of the beach where it is promoted, with a registration table where the artists are required to register, and pay a small fee to the city for their contributions to civic beauty. If you arrive anytime after Friday afternoon, and on into the weekend, every single weekend there are free concerts, free performances, set up in a circus like tent city in the open plaza area of the main entrance to the beach, to say nothing of the non-stop traffic along the beach, on a ribbon of concrete that serves as a bicycle path, roller path, and jogging path. Hikers have a separate path, that parallels the bike/roller path and continues on past the boardwalk, all the way through to the end of Santa Monica, and on, and on, still further.
It is a continuous hot-bed of activity, of cultures and styles from many different segments and times, representing a multi-time dimensional fantasy trip that should clash and conflict, but doesn't, they just seem to meld together in this very special melting pot by the sea. To come to Southern California. To Los Angeles, only to go on the guided tours of Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios is to have wasted your vacation entirely. No place is more LA, than the Venice Beach Boardwalk, IT IS LA !!!
